Lucky Me

Lucky me--I got my first migraine in almost six years today just as Church ended. Lucky me--my family let me sleep it off all afternoon. Lucky me--I had medicine in the cupboard. Lucky me--I think it should be gone by morning.

Truly lucky me.
While I was in UT, I was able to have lunch with four of my five BYU freshman-year roommates. Thanks, Paige, for organizing it. Sorry, Paige. Remember I only had the busboy take one picture, and unfortunately your eyes were closed.
This lunch was interesting for me. A few of these women I hadn't seen in over twenty years. And we all look the same, don't we? (Actually my kids commented that Robin looked way younger than the rest of us--in the orange--don't let it go to your head, Robin!)  They all seemed much like I remembered them--their laughs, their mannerisms.  But, including Lisa who currently lives back East, we have 26 kids, five husbands (and one ex), six homes, various callings, jobs and lives.  It was weird to think that they've been living basically the same life that I have--mothering, driving, working, playing, growing.  And although they seem much the same, I know we're all different.  Twenty years has brought infertility, adoption, brain tumors, divorce, stillbirths, job loss, new schooling, and much change. And as much as they seemed the same, I knew I was very different--not the same HYPER door-slamming immature 18-year-old I was in 1987.  But would I go back? Do it again?  I loved that time in my life--probably my favorite memories ever.  But I wouldn't change who I have become to get my youth back. I love where I was, where I've been, where I am, and where I'm going. Lucky me.

I guess it's true what they say--you can never go back.  But it was nice to try for an afternoon at Paradise Bakery.

Thanks, ladies.

  1. Well, I must admit it went to my head for only a moment...but the fact that I have to squint to read your blog...reminds me that I am getting older.

Paige and I had a similar conversation on our way home...we all were obviously different, but very much the same... But you, as should be expected, described it all so well.

I agree that I wouldn't change much of those times. It was a time of growth and finding one's self...and it was sooo much fun doing it with you all.

So glad we all got to have lunch together...and I loved seeing/playing with little Eve...she's a doll! You have a lot to be proud of and grateful for.

  2. That's ok. I have squinty eyes, and they are closed for a great many a picture.

So fun to see you and everyone. Let's do it again in 5 years!

  5. That's exactly my feeling on the "going back" scenario. I love to do it for a day or a weekend, but would I truly give up everything I've done and learned and been through to revisit those times permanently? No way! (Even though, as you say, some of them were the best times of my life.)

    =)

  6. How well I remember your first migraine. None of them have been fun. I am sure you are up and running today even though you probably still have remnants of headache. How fun to get together with "old" friends!

  7. What a great time you all must have had! I would love to see all of my old roommates again - we did have fun! I think you all look great, like a bunch of girlfriends having a wonderful day. I wouldn't go back either, but it sure is fun to reconnect every once in awhile.

  9. How fun to meet up with your college roomies after so many years. I would love to do that but we did not stay in touch. And last I heard everyone was scattered across the country. Fun reunion - Do you have a before and after picture?

And Yes we live near Boise. Idaho is a great place! I love Twin Falls too - the Temple there is SO beautiful!

  10. What a fun lunch to have! It's always fun to see old friends...mind you, none of you looked old. Sorry about your headache. I can empathize. I sure hope you are all better and have the energy to get everything you need, done. We will see you on Friday!

  11. Looks like you guys had a great time. I'd love to meet up with my college chums but, alas, that is a sacrifice of moving 4,500 miles away from them. Thank goodness for technology!

  12. Such Fun! I am sure my roomies and I would get kicked out of any respectible place because I somehow feel we would still be to loud! You all look great!

    Hope your meds worked.

  13. I would love to get together with my freshmen roomates, but I think they have gone into witness protection to avoid me.

  14. What a great post! I LOVED it! It is sooo true how much we change and grow and develop, and yet feel like we're still young. I too wouldn't go back, but I'm grateful for the lessons learned! So glad you had such a great time in UT.
