Sugar Monkey Update

So, I'm sure you've been wondering how I'm doing on the no-sugar challenge. You haven't, huh? You'd forgotten that I vowed to avoid sugar for the entire month of June? Well, click here for your friendly reminder.

And I must say, for the record, that I've done really well. Full disclosure--I did take a nose dive off the wagon one day last week when I was getting Tucker ready to leave, and I just needed a few (dozen) of my homemade chocolate chip cookies to assuage my pain. But that doesn't count, does it? I mean, you only lose your oldest son to college once in a lifetime, and if you can't drown your sorrows is balls of chocolate and fat, then what is worth living for, anyway?

One product I've found that I love is this:

I found these at Costco a few weeks ago. I know what you're thinking. These are just like every other fruity snack on the market--some fruit but mostly sugar or corn syrup. Nope. Check the label. I did.
See? Nothing. And they taste great! Really. It curbs my sweet tooth with just one small roll. And they're hidden in my armoire, away from little hands and mouths.

I also occasionally enjoy a Skinny Cow, no sugar added ice cream sandwich. They're okay. Especially if you're really hot from sitting out by the pool for hours.

And I should easily make it through to July 1. Not really even tempted to cheat (except that one day--and that doesn't count, right?).

  1. Totally doesn't count. Because yes, sending Tucker off to college, total stress ball. Cookies were simply a necessity. So, what was MY problem? Too many to name.

  2. Doesn't count at all. That was medicinal chocolate cookie, not the snack kind. No convincing needed, here!

  3. Well, I couldn't do it - especially if I didn't have one "cheat" - so I think you're doing well. I LOVED fruit roll ups when I was a kid. My mom put them in my lunch box. Fun times. :)

  4. I agree...Tucker's leaving required a complete batch or two cookies. Only a few dozen? You did great! I am falling on and off the wagon with the sugar thing. As long as I don't make cookies I do quite well! :)

  5. I need to find those fruit roll-ups!
I have never seen the "healthy" version. :)
Trying (sorta) with the whole no sugar thing....but not very well I might add.
    Maybe these will help!:)
    Enjoy the day

  6. A child leaving home for college is always a good enough reason to consume sugar when you are on a "no sugar" rule. I'm surprised you didn't make and polish off an entire chocolate cake to ease that pain! I know I would...and more :)

I love fruit roll-ups. We use to get them as a treat for drinking bitter herbal soups so I've always loved them :)

  7. I saw those snacks at Costco last week, and thought they looked fabulous. Didn't buy any though-what if they stunk? Can't stand to waste the $$ glad to hear they are as sweet craving satisfying as they look!

  8. Costco is on our agenda this weekend and I've gotta try this new fruit roll-up. Hopefully I heart them as much as my airheads...so they can take the place in my cabinet of my hidden stash of candy. ('Cause just like you, little hands will eat them if they find them!)

  9. Nope. Doesn't count at all as it was therapy. And we all need therapy every now and again. Glad you've found your panacea in the fruit rollups - isn't it great when you find something that works? Congrats on a great effort. When you see Tucker next he won't believe what a hot mama you've become!

  10. I love those Skinny Cow ice cream sandwiches. Have you ever had a mint one? Yummy.

I still haven't eaten like I want to consistently this month. I have two good days going right now. Quite a run.

  14. Thank you for showing me the ingredients...I spend HOURS in the grocery store reading ingredients...I know...pathetic. I think I should pick these up. A friend told me to keep lollipops in the house..(sugar free would be best I guess!)...they take a long time to eat and it would curb your craving. I love skinny cow stuff too but my KIDS seem to eat them all...uugh! :)

  15. Drowning your sorrows does not count. And no, that day doesn't either. Good find on the sweets! The ingredient list words that we can say!!!

  16. I live by the no sugar, no flour, limited dairy and I can tell when I fall off the wagon. It makes a huge difference health wise. Have you tried agave nectar. I get that at TJ's along with some Greek yogurt and have it with berries. Delicious!

  17. I think that was the only appropriate way to handle the departure of Tucker. I need to get rid of my own sugar monkey, but I love him so.
