From 4 to 2, Just Like That

Eve got a bike for Christmas.
Of all of my children, she is the most averse to unfamiliar places and trying new things. New playdates or visits to new places are almost always accompanied with tears, clinging to Mom's leg, even tantrums that she won't do it.
Because she avoids new risks and situations so much, I thought the training wheels would be on her bike for a long time. I was wrong.

She waited all day Wednesday for her daddy to get home from work so he could help her. Off came the wheels, down the street she went.

Oh. And down she went, too.
Look at Brad's face. He's smiling and happy, trying to convince her that falling isn't that bad. My other kids would give up after a fall or two.

Not Evie. She practiced and tried as long as Daddy would run beside her.

It rained for the rest of the week, and every time there was a break in the storm, she would beg to get back on her bike. A few falls, more streamers knocked off the handlebars. Still not discouraged. Still determined to ride.

Sunday morning was clear and cool . . . perfect bike weather.
She can balance and pedal pretty well, as long as she remembers to look where she's going and steer.
Now she needs to master the hard parts--starting, stopping, and turning.

My money is on her being a bike rider by the end of the week.

  1. I always felt that watching my kids learn to ride their bikes was a sure sign they were no longer a baby, just a full kid. It's both exhilirating and slightly saddening.
